The Certificate of Origin (COO) is important export documentation that certifies the place of manufacture, growth or production of goods. The document holds importance when trading in specific countries, for customs clearance, or when stipulated in the letter of credit.

The Australian Certificate of Origin is an express certification by the government authority or an empowered body that the goods are manufactured, grown or produced in Australia.

Why Do I Need a Certificate of Origin?

You may require a Certificate of Australian Origin:

  • To export goods from Australia 
  • To initiate payment, the receiving company may require a Certificate of Origin before authorizing the bank to issue a Letter of Credit 
  • To expedite the customs clearance process at the destination country 
  • To enjoy preferential tariffs as per free trade agreements with specific countries

What Are the Different Types of Australian Certificates of Origin?

AANZFTA: The AANZFTA Certificate of Origin is required to have reduced export tariff or duty rates on specific goods under the Free Trade Agreement between Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN countries.

TAFTA: You may require the TAFTA Certificate of Origin to gain preferential tariff rates under the Free Trade Agreement between Thailand and Australia.

KAFTA: Having a KAFTA Certificate of Origin may help you have special export duty preferences as per the Free Trade Agreement between Korea and Australia.

JAEPA: The JAEPA Certificate of Origin is required for every shipment of goods between Japan and Australia to claim preferential duty rates as under Japan Australian Economic Partnership Agreement.      

How to Get a Certificate of Origin?

  • Submit duly filled-up Exporters Information Form Update to the proper issuing authority along with a list of signatories who are approved to sign the certificate on behalf of your company. 
  • Provide proof of origin ( a bill of lading, a copy of the invoice, letter of credit, or statutory declaration)  before stamping
  • Provide a copy of all documents for Chamber records and the exporter must sign on the bottom left side under the exporter’s declaration 
  • The Australian Certificate of Origin forms cannot be used for any other origin other than Australia
